Last year the Vatican hosted a conference about how we can care for our planet’s biodiversity. Their solution? To curb our wasteful habits. Many of the goods and services we consume depend on the minerals and fossil fuels that come from extractive industries, and which takes a toll on all creation. If you only look at those goods and services (or “outputs”), the conference noted, then you forget the resources that go into producing them. We need a more holistic approach to help us examine our relationship with creation.
